The pain seemed to echo and double. I felt it ricocheting back on me and I lost any sense of the magic blockers. I couldnât feel anything except pain, and while the silver-and-iron bullet had been agony, this was somehow worseâI knew this wouldnât kill me.
Then I had the sudden thought that they might just be taking my magic now, without warning, and I arched up off the table with a scream of pure fear. Let me out, let me out, let me out!
The pain ceased abruptly and despite myself, I sagged back onto the table. The sense of relief was palpable. Feeling nothing had never been so wonderful.
A moment later, I realized the magic blockers were gone. I made a show of leaning back on the table, heaving for breath. I was soaked in sweat and I could still remember the pain all too well, but I wasnât truly dwelling on it.
Instead, I let the power coil in my palm and tried to figure out where in the room Dr. Woodfield and her complete creep of an assistant were. I couldnât look as if I was looking at them. I simply needed to strike before they knew what I was doing.
The sound of a footstep nearby was oddly muffled, but it gave me enough. My eyes snapped open and I was ready to throw my powerâ
I stopped. I was surrounded by a cage of sorts, panes of some sort of glass that hummed with energy. Through them, I could see the green eyes of Woodfieldâs assistant. He was smiling at me, completely unafraid.
Now I knew why theyâd turned the blockers off.
âPlease do give a demonstration of your power.â Dr. Woodfieldâs voice, piped in via a microphone clipped to her lapel, sounded amused. âThatâs what weâre here for, after all.â
If she wanted me to, I knew that it was the worst thing I could do. I flattened my hand on the table and lay back, still aware of the manâs gaze on me as if dirty, sticky fingers were trailing over my skin.
âAnd, as we will be spending some time together, let us have proper introductions. As I mentioned, I am Diana Woodfield. This is my assistant, Kal. And you are?â
âNone of your business.â I closed my eyes again. I could still feel Kal watching me.
He was one of the converted ones. My eyes opened again and I stared at the ceiling with something that felt like grief twisting in my chest. Kal was one of the children Chloe had known, I was absolutely sure of it.
I turned my head slowly to look at him and a smile split across his face. I had once made a good-faith effort to kill millions of people, and his smile still brought me out in a cold sweat.
âCome now.â Dr. Woodfieldâs voice was brusque. âYour name.â
âNo.â
I knew this game, and so I was expecting the pain when it came again. This was the obedience game. First, they had given me a taste of what they could inflict.
